IBID. — Et rursum latissimæ funduntur aquæ. 53. Quorumdam postea emollita, et in pluviam Ii.. quata. — Post gelu quippe Dominus latissimas aquas futlt, qnia postquam Judaeorum saevitiam usque ad mortem pertulit, eorum corda protinus ab infidelitatis duritia amoris sui aspiratione liquefecit; ut tanto post desiderabilius ad obediendum currerent, quanto praeceptis illius prius obstinatius restitissent. Unde bene per quemdam sapientem dicitur:Sicut gla- ciesin sereno, sic resolventur peccata tua(Eccti.III,1 7). Ab hoc frigidi torporis gelu solvi Propheta desideraverat, cnm dicebat: Converte, Domine, captivitatem nostram, sicut torrens in Austro (PIal.
IBID. — 'And again the waters are poured out most widely.' 53. Afterward softened in some, and dissolved into rain. — For after the frost the Lord poured out the widest waters, because after He had endured the savagery of the Jews even unto death, He straightway liquefied their hearts from the hardness of unbelief by the breathing of His love; so that afterward they might run to obey the more desirably, in proportion as they had before resisted His precepts the more obstinately. Whence it is well said through a certain wise man: 'As ice in fair weather, so shall thy sins be dissolved' (Ecclus. III, 17). From this frost of cold torpor the Prophet had desired to be loosed, when he said: 'Turn, O Lord, our captivity, as a stream in the South' (Ps.

CXXV,4).De his aquis, id est ad Deum concurrentibus populis, rursum dicitur: M ittet verbum suum, et liquefaciet ea, b flabit spiritus ejus, et fluent aquæ (Psal. CILVII, 18). Aquae de gelu currunt, quia plerique ex duris persecutoribus magni praedicatores fiunt.Cetu igitur in aqua liquatur, cum torpor interni frigoris ad irrigationem 879 vertitur prædicationis. An paulus gelu non erat, qui acceptis epistolis Damascum pergens (Acl. lIt i), in corde fidelium quasi in terra jactata verbi Dei semina, ne ad perfectionem operum sargerent, restringere quærebat ?Sed gelu hoc in aquam rediit, quia quos persequendo prius premere studuit, bos postmodum fluentis sanctae exhortationis infudit;
CXXV, 4). Of these waters, that is, of the peoples running together to God, it is again said: 'He shall send forth His word, and shall melt them; His spirit shall blow, and the waters shall flow' (Ps. CXLVII, 18). The waters run from the frost, because very many out of hard persecutors become great preachers. The frost, therefore, is liquefied into water, when the torpor of inward cold is turned to the irrigation of preaching. 879. Or was not Paul frost, who, having received letters and going to Damascus (Acts IX, 1-2), sought to restrain in the heart of the faithful the seeds of God's word, as though cast upon the earth, lest they rise up to the perfection of works? But this frost returned into water, because those whom he first was zealous to oppress by persecuting, these he afterward flooded with the streams of holy exhortation;
論到這些水,就是那些一同奔向神的萬民,又說:「祂發出命令,使冰融化;祂使風颳起,水便流動」(詩篇一四七篇18節)。水從霜中流出,因為許多本是剛硬的逼迫者變成了偉大的宣講者。所以霜融化為水,就是當內心寒冷的麻木轉為宣講的澆灌之時。879。難道保羅不曾是霜麼?他領了文書往大馬士革去(使徒行傳九章1-2節),要在信徒心中攔阻神話語的種子——那彷彿撒在地上的種子——唯恐它們長成完全的善行?但這霜又化為水,因為那些他先前熱心藉逼迫壓制的人,他後來卻用聖潔勸勉的江河澆灌他們;

so that a harvest of the elect might rise up the more abundantly, in proportion as the rain of God watered it even from the mouth of a persecutor. Whence it is also well added:
好使被揀選者的收成越發豐盛地興起,正如神的雨甚至從一個逼迫者的口中澆灌它。所以也恰當地補充說:
