I bid. — Putasne saltem ibi erit requies mihi? 55. Job de sua salute trepidante, nemo securus sit.— In quibus nimirum verbis et innotescit quod desi- derat, et tamen esse se adhuc de suscipienda requie dubium designat, ne cujus sancta opera tot flagella secuta sunt, occulto judicio superni judicis, post fla- gella temporalia etiam mansura tormenta sequeren- tur. Qua in re cum magno nobis timore pensandum est quis nostrum jam de requie aeterna securus sit, si de ea adhuc et ille trepidat cujus virtutis praeconia et ipse judex qui percutit a clamat: Si enim justus vix salvabitur, impius et peccator b ubi parebunt ( I Pet. iv, 18)?

Since Job trembles concerning his own salvation, let no one be secure.—In which words he both makes known what he desires, and yet shows himself still doubtful concerning the rest to be received, lest, upon one whose holy works so many scourges followed, by the hidden judgment of the supernal Judge, after the temporal scourges even abiding torments should follow. In which matter it must be weighed by us with great fear, which of us is now secure concerning eternal rest, if even he still trembles concerning it whose praises of virtue the Judge Himself who smites proclaims: 'For if the just man shall scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?' (1 Pet. iv. 18).

Beatus etenim Job ad requiem se post flagella perventurum noverat; sed ut nostra timore corda concuteret, ipse visus est de aeternae quietis retributione dubitare cum dicit Putasne? ut nos vi- delicet perpendamus quanta debemus formidine ven- turum judicium semper expavescere, quando et ille c qui a judice laudatus est adhuc de retributione judi- cii in suis vocibus securus non est.
For blessed Job knew that he would come to rest after the scourges; but that he might shake our hearts with fear, he himself is seen to doubt concerning the recompense of eternal rest when he says 'Thinkest thou?'—that we, namely, may weigh with how great a dread we ought ever to fear the coming judgment, when even he who was praised by the Judge is not yet, in his own words, secure concerning the recompense of the judgment.
