10. Omnis arrogant aut pænitendo cognoscit cul pam, aut pereundo percipit pœnam. — Ac si dicat ut ego. Apte autem ad vindictae ordinem arroganlibus superborum culpa praeponitur, quia nimirum non superbia de arrogantia, sed generatur arrogantia de superbia. Duobus autcm modis a Domino peccator unusquisque respicitur, cum aut a peccato convertitur, aut ex peccato punitur. De respectu enim conversionis dicitur: Quia respexit Dominus Petrum, et recordatus Petrus, b verbi Jesu flevit amare (Luc. XXII, 6t). De respectu ultionis rursus dicitur: Vullus aulena Domini super jacientes mala, ut perdat de terra memoriam eorum (PIal. XXXIII, 17).
Every arrogant person either by penance knows his fault, or by perishing perceives his punishment. As if he says: as I. But fittingly, according to the order of vengeance, the fault of the proud is set before the arrogant, because indeed not pride is generated from arrogance, but arrogance from pride. Now in two ways is each sinner regarded by the Lord, when either he is converted from sin, or is punished for sin. For of the regard of conversion it is said: 'Because the Lord looked upon Peter, and Peter, remembering the word of Jesus, wept bitterly' (Luke 22:61). Of the regard of retribution it is again said: 'But the countenance of the Lord is upon them that do evil things, to destroy their memory from the earth' (Ps. 33:17).
每一個傲慢之人或藉悔罪認識自己的過失,或藉滅亡領受自己的刑罰。彷彿祂說:如同我。但照報應的次序,把驕傲之過置於傲慢者之前是恰當的,因為實在不是驕傲由傲慢而生,而是傲慢由驕傲而生。如今每一個罪人被主眷顧有兩種方式,即:或他從罪中歸化,或他為罪受罰。因為論到歸化的眷顧,經上說:「因為主回頭看伯多祿,伯多祿想起耶穌的話,就痛哭起來」(路加二十二61)。論到報應的眷顧,又說:「上主的面卻向著作惡的人,要從地上除滅他們的紀念」(詠三十三17)。
