V ers. 4.— Sapiens corde est, et fortis robore. 4. Deus ut sapiens falli, ut fortis vitari non potest. —Quid mirum si conditorem sapientium, sapientem dicimus, quem ipsam esse sapientiam scimus? Et quid mirum quod fortem esse memorat, quem hanc ipsam esse fortitudinem nullus ignorat? Sed sanctus vir duobus verbis in laudem auctoris prolatis, ali- quid nobis intimat, unde nos ad cognit onem nostram trepidos reducat. Sapiens quippe Deus dicitur, quia occulta nostra subtiliter agnoscit; et esse fortis ad- jungitur, quia valenter cognita percutit. Nec falli er- go a nobis, quia sapiens; nec vitari, quia fortis est, valet.
Verse 4: He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. 4. As one who is wise, God cannot be deceived; as one who is mighty, He cannot be escaped. What wonder is it if we call Him wise who is the Maker of the wise, since we know that He is Wisdom itself? And what wonder that Job records Him to be mighty, when no one is ignorant that He is Might itself? Yet the holy man, by uttering these two words in praise of his Author, intimates something to us whereby he may lead us back, trembling, to the knowledge of ourselves. For God is called wise, because He subtly discerns the things hidden within us; and He is added to be mighty, because He mightily strikes what He has discerned. He cannot, then, be deceived by us, because He is wise; nor escaped, because He is mighty.
第四節——祂心中有智慧，力量甚是強壯。第四段。神既是智慧的，就不能受欺哄；既是強壯的，就不能被逃避。我們稱那位造成智者的為智者，這有何可奇？我們既知祂本身就是智慧。約伯記祂為強壯的，這有何可奇？既無人不知祂本身就是能力。然而這聖人在讚美其創造主時所發的這兩個字，卻向我們暗示某事，藉此把戰兢的我們引回到對自己的認識。原來神被稱為智慧的，因為祂精微地察知我們隱藏之事；又加上祂是強壯的，因為祂大有能力地擊打祂所察知的。所以祂既是智慧的，就不能被我們所欺哄；既是強壯的，就不能被逃避。

Nunc ut sapiens omnia invisibilis aspicit, tunc ut fortis sine ullo obstaculo quos reprobat punit. Qui hoc quoque hic forti sapientia ordinat, ut hu- mana mens cum contra auctorem se elevat, ipsa se sua elatione confundat. Unde et subditur:
Now, as one who is wise, the Invisible beholds all things; then, as one who is mighty, without any hindrance He punishes those whom He condemns. And He who orders even this here by His mighty wisdom, ordains that the human mind, when it exalts itself against its Author, should by its very self-exaltation confound itself. Whence it is also subjoined:
