881:1
19. To some it is given for their judgement that they should know certain things rightly. — It is written: 「The servant who knew the will of his lord, and prepared not, and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few」 (Luke 12:47-48). And again it is written: 「To him therefore who knoweth to do good, and doth it not, to him it is sin」 (James 4:17). Holy Church therefore declares that her enemies gather up a greater heap of guilt, in both knowing what they ought to follow, and being unwilling to follow what they know. Of whom it is said elsewhere: 「Let them go down alive into hell」 (Psalm 55:15). The living are those who feel what is done concerning them. For the dead neither know at all, nor feel.
The dead, therefore, who do not feel, are wont to be put for the ignorant, but the living who feel, for the knowing. To go down into hell alive, then, is to sin knowingly and feelingly. [Section 10.] There follows, verse 13: 「This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the inheritance of the violent, which they shall receive from the Almighty.」 Which portion and inheritance he at once explains, when he subjoins:
