23. Sisanctiores maculæ non sunt expertes, quot sordent qui carnis spurcitiis immerguntar. - Ac si aperte diceretur: Si ipsi quoque esse sine contagio non valent, qui imer praesentis vitae tenebras virtutibus lucenl, quanto reatu iniquitatis obstricti sunt qui adhuc carnaliter vivunt? Si a peccato esse iiberi nequeunt qui jam in coelestibus desideriis conversantur, qui peccatorum pondera tolerant qui, carnis suæ voluptatibus dediti, adhuc putredinis jugum portant? Hinc Petrus ait: Si justus vix salvabitur, impius et peccator ubi parebunt (1 Pet. IV, 18)? Hinc per Isaiam dicitur:

If the holier are not exempt from stains, how much do they defile who are immersed in the filthiness of the flesh?—As if it were openly said: If even those cannot be without contagion who shine with virtues amid the darkness of the present life, with how great a guilt of iniquity are those bound who still live carnally? If those cannot be free from sin who already dwell in heavenly desires, how do those bear the weights of sins who, given over to the pleasures of their flesh, still carry the yoke of rottenness? Hence Peter says: 'If the just man is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?' (1 Pet. IV, 18). Hence it is said through Isaiah:

Domus vero gaudii civitatis exsultanlis est mens pravorum, quae dum ventura supplicia conspicere negligit, in carnis voluptate se deserens, inasiter hilarescit. Ait ergo: Super hamum populi mei sinæ et vepres ascendent, quanto magis super omnem amum gaudii civitatis exsultanlis? ? Ac si aperte dicai:
'Upon the ground of my people shall thorns and briers come up, how much more upon every house of the joy of the exulting city?' (Isaiah XXXII, 13). For the Lord calls the mind of all the elect the ground of his people, upon which he declares thorns and briers to come up, because he sees that not even it is without the prickings of vices. But the house of the joy of the exulting city is the mind of the wicked, which, while it neglects to behold the punishments to come, abandoning itself in the pleasure of the flesh, is uselessly merry. He says therefore: 'Upon the ground of my people shall thorns and briers come up, how much more upon every house of the joy of the exulting city?' As if he plainly said:

Si et illorum mentem litia deprimunt, qui, se procœlestis patriae desiderio affigunt, quibus a culpis substrati sunt qui sine ulla formidine sese in carnis voluptate derelinquunt? 24. Primus homo putredo, cujus filii cermel. — Notandum vero in sermone suo quantum Baldad ordiuem conditionis nostræ tenuit et nativitatis, qui honinem non vermem, sed putredinem, filium vero hominis vermem vocat. Primus namque humani generis parens, homo, non filius hominis, ex quo quisquis prodiit, non solum homo, sed filius quoque hominis fuit. Sicut ergo ex homine filius hominis, ita ex putredine nascitur vermis. Unde recte homo putredo, filius vero hominis vermis vocatur.
If vices weigh down even the minds of those who fasten themselves to the desire of the heavenly fatherland, by what faults are they laid low who without any fear abandon themselves in the pleasure of the flesh? 24. The first man is rottenness, whose sons are the worm.—But it is to be noted in his discourse how greatly Bildad kept the order of our condition and of birth, who calls man not a worm but rottenness, but the son of man a worm. For the first parent of the human race, man, was not the son of man; from whom whoever came forth was not only man, but also son of man. As therefore from man comes the son of man, so from rottenness is born the worm. Whence rightly man is called rottenness, but the son of man a worm.

Primus quippe homo putredo, non vermis, quia etsi per mortem putruit, non tamen ex putredine per nalivitatem venit. Qui autem hominis est filius, vermis dicitur, quia jam ex mortalinm corporum corruptione propagatur. 23. Igitur quia amicorum verba finita sunt, beatus Job altiori acumine prosecutionis innititur, ejusque dicta tam sunt valida, quam extrema, quia et sic usus esse b jurisperitorum solet, ut argumentum, quo adversariis suis eminere se praevident, ad prosecutionis conclusionem servent. Sequitur:
For the first man was rottenness, not a worm, because although he rotted through death, yet he did not come through birth from rottenness. But he who is the son of man is called a worm, because he is now propagated from the corruption of mortal bodies. 25. Therefore, because the words of the friends are finished, blessed Job leans upon the higher sharpness of his continuation, and his sayings are as strong as they are last, because it is the custom of jurists so to act, that they reserve for the conclusion of their pleading the argument by which they foresee themselves to prevail over their adversaries. There follows:
