483:1
I bid. — Et spes illorum abominatio animae. 42. Quod iniquo voluptas, hoc poena est justo. Unde reficitur caro, inde deficit spiritus. — Quid hic pecca- tor totis cogitationibus sperat, nisi ut potestate cae- teros transeat, cunctos rerum multiplicitate transcen- dat, adversantes dominando subjiciat, obsequentibus mirandus innotescat, irae ad votum satisfaciat, beni- gnum se, cum laudatur, ostendat; quidquid gula ap- petit, offerat; ad hoc quod voluptas imperat, operis expletione concurrat? Bene ergo spes illorum abo- minatio animae dicitur, quia et ea quae carnales am- biunt spiritales quique judicio rectitudinis aversantur.
Ibid. — And their hope is the abomination of the soul. 42. What is pleasure to the wicked is punishment to the just. Where the flesh is refreshed, thence the spirit fails. — What here does the sinner hope for with all his thoughts, except that he may surpass others in power, transcend all in the multiplicity of things, subject the opposing to himself by domination, become known as admirable to those who obey him, satisfy his anger at will, show himself benign when he is praised; offer whatever his gluttony craves; concur by the fulfillment of the work to that which pleasure commands? Well, therefore, is their hope called the abomination of the soul, because those very things which the carnal covet, spiritual men turn away from by the judgment of rectitude.
[ Vet. XXIV.] Abomi- natio igitur est animae, spes pravorum, quia nimirum spiritus deficit, ubi caro requiescit. Ut enim caro mollibus, sic anima duris nutritur: illam blanda refovent, hanc aspera exercent; illa delectationibus pascitur, haec amaritudinibus vegetatur. Et sicut car- nem dura sauciant, sic spiritum mollia necant; f si- cut illam laboriosa interimunt, ita hunc delectabilia exstinguunt Spes itaque carnalium, abominatio animae dicitur, quia inde in perpetuum spiritus interit, unde ad tempus earo suaviter vivit. 43. Recte dicta saepe corrumpit loquentis indiscretio.
For what sinners esteem as pleasure, this the just without doubt account as punishment. The hope of the depraved, therefore, is the abomination of the soul, because assuredly the spirit fails where the flesh rests. For as the flesh is nourished by soft things, so the soul by hard things: soft things cherish the former, harsh things exercise the latter; the one is fed by delights, the other is quickened by bitternesses. And as hard things wound the flesh, so soft things kill the spirit; as laborious things destroy the former, so delightful things extinguish the latter. The hope, therefore, of the carnal is called the abomination of the soul, because from that source the spirit perishes forever, from which for a time the flesh lives pleasantly. 43. The indiscretion of the speaker often corrupts things rightly said.
483:3
Sed haec Sophar recte diceret, nisi beatus Job cuncta largius etiam vivendo praedicasset. At post- quam sanctiorem monere de vita nititur, doctiorem- que se erudire sapientiae magisterio conatur, ipse dictorum suorum pondus levigat, qui, indiscretione interposita, omne quod loquitur destruit, quia liquo- rem scientiae pleno vasculo superfundit. Sic namque ab indiscretis opes scientiae, sicut a stultis saepe opes corporalis substantiae possidentur. Nonnulli enim, qui rerum terrenarum multiplicitate Subnixi sunt, ali- quando multa et habentibus tribuunt, ut ipsi haec cunctis largius habere videantur. Ita perversi, cum vera sapiunt, recta quaedam etiam rectioribus loquun- tur;
— But Sophar would say these things rightly, had not blessed Job proclaimed all things more amply by his very living. But after he strives to admonish one holier concerning life, and endeavors to instruct with the mastery of wisdom one more learned than himself, he himself lightens the weight of his own words; for, indiscretion being interposed, he destroys all that he speaks, because he pours the liquor of knowledge over a full vessel. For thus the riches of knowledge are possessed by the indiscreet, as often the riches of bodily substance are possessed by the foolish. For some, who are propped up by the multiplicity of earthly things, sometimes give much even to those who have, that they themselves may be seen to have these things more abundantly than all. So the perverse, when they savor true things, speak certain right things even to those more right;
——但瑣法本可把這些話說得正確,若非蒙福的約伯藉他自己的生活更豐盛地宣講了這一切。然而,在他力圖勸勉一位在生活上更聖潔的人、並竭力以智慧的教導去指教一位比自己更有學問的人之後,他自己卻減輕了自己言語的分量;因為既插入了失於審慎,他便毀壞了所說的一切,因為他把知識的汁液傾倒在已滿的器皿之上。因為知識的財富之被無審慎者所持有,正如身體資財的財富常被愚人所持有。因為有些人,倚仗世俗之物的繁多,有時甚至將許多贈與那已有之人,好使自己顯為比眾人更豐盛地擁有這些。照樣,邪僻之人當領悟真理時,甚至向那更正直的人講說某些正確之事;
483:4
not that they may teach others who hear, but that they themselves may become known for how great learning they excel in. For they esteem that they surpass all in wisdom, and therefore they think they say nothing to anyone beyond the measure of their own greatness. Thus any depraved, thus all heretics, with proud voice fear not to teach their betters, because they judge all inferior to themselves. But holy Church recalls each of the lifted-up from the summit of their own self-estimation, and by the hand of discretion reforms them to the framework of equality. Whence blessed Job, who is a member of that same holy Church, seeing that the mind of his friends had swelled through words of vaunted erudition, replied on the spot, saying:
