I bid.— Aut aliquid tibi molestum est, si loquaris? 4. Justi convicia non reddunt. — Mali viri Cum aliis sibi similibus conviciosa verba proferunt, eo citius obmutescunt, quo de se talia mox audiunt qualia suis auditoribus dicunt. Cum autem bonos viros per con- viciosa verba jaculantur, nil eis molestiae ex convicio nascitur, quia contra tacentes loquuntur, nec com- pelluntur audire quod sunt, quia justi convicia non reddunt, etiam dum coguntur audire quod non sunt. Bene ergo dicitur: Aut aliquid tibi molestum est, si loquaris? Ac si ei aperte diceretur; Eo plus loqueris quo a me molestum aliquid de tua actione non audis. Unde et subditur,—V ers. 4.— Poteram et ego similia vestri loqui.
Ibid. — Or is it troublesome to you, if you should speak? 4. The just do not return reproaches. — When wicked men utter reproachful words to others like themselves, they fall silent all the more quickly the sooner they hear said of themselves the very things they say to their hearers. But when they hurl reproachful words against good men, no trouble arises to those men from the reproach, because they speak against those who keep silence, nor are these compelled to hear what they are, since the just do not return reproaches, even while they are forced to hear what they are not. Well then is it said: Or is it troublesome to you, if you should speak? As if it were openly said to him: You speak all the more, the less you hear anything troublesome from me about your conduct. Whence also it is added: — Verse 4. — I too could speak like you.
