8. Temporalis principis potestatem sibi servire cogit Christus, eique suam Ecclesiam credidit ac commendavit. — In rhinocerotis fortitudine fiduciam Dominus habere se asserit, quia vires quas temporaliter terreno principi contulit, ad cultum suae venerationis inclinavit, ut ex accepta potestate, per quam dudum contra Deum tumuerat, religiosum nunc Deo obsequium impendat. Quo enim in mundum plus potest, eo pro mundi auctore plus praevalet. Nam quia a subjeclis ipse metuitur, tanto facilius persuadet, quanto et eum potestate indicat qui vere metuatur. Dicatur ergo: Nunquid fiduciam habebis in magna fortitudine ejus ? Ac si diceretur:
Christ compels the power of the temporal prince to serve Him, and has entrusted and committed His Church to him. — The Lord asserts that He has confidence in the strength of the rhinoceros, because the powers which He conferred temporally upon the earthly prince He has bent to the worship of His own veneration, so that from the power he received—through which he once swelled against God—he may now render religious obedience to God. For the more he is able in the world, the more he prevails on behalf of the Author of the world. For because he himself is feared by his subjects, he persuades the more easily, in proportion as he points out with his power Him who is truly to be feared. Let it therefore be said: Wilt thou have confidence in his great strength? As if it were said:
基督強使暫時君王的權力服事祂，並將祂的教會託付、交付與他。——主聲稱祂倚靠犀牛的力量，因為祂在暫時中賜給屬地君王的力量，祂已使之屈向於敬拜祂的尊崇，好叫君王從所領受的權力——他從前藉此向神自高——如今向神獻上虔敬的順服。因為他在世上越有能力，就越發為著世界的創造主而得勝。因為他自己既被臣屬所懼怕，就越容易勸服人，正因他以自己的權力指明那位真正當受敬畏的主。所以當說：「你豈能倚靠牠的大力嗎？」彷彿說：

Ut ego, qui vires terrenorum principum meo cultui servituras aspicio. Tanto h enim ea quae nunc agis, minora aestimo, quanto jam praevideo, quia et majores hujus mundi mihi potestates inclinabo. Bene autem subditur: Et derelinques ei labores tuos? Labores enim suos huic rhinoceroti Dominus reliquit, quia converso terreno principi eam quam sua morte mercatus est, Ecclesiam credidit:,quia videlicet in ejus manu quanta sollicitudine pax fidei sit tuenda commisit. Sequitur:
as I, who behold the strength of earthly princes destined to serve My worship. For I esteem the things you now do the less, in proportion as I already foresee that I shall bend to Myself even the greater powers of this world. And well is it subjoined: And wilt thou leave thy labours to him? For the Lord left His labours to this rhinoceros, because, the earthly prince being converted, He entrusted to him the Church, which He purchased by His own death; that is to say, He committed into his hand with how great solicitude the peace of the faith is to be guarded. There follows:
