infinitus.—In cognitione humanæ rationis supernorum spirituum numerus non est, quia quanta sit illa frequentia invisibilis f exercitus nescit; de quo per Danielem dicitur: Millia millium ministrabant ei, et decies millies centena millia assistebant ei (Danie!., VII, 10). Supernorum civium numerus g infinitus et delinitus exprimitur, ut qui Deo est numerabilis, esse hominibus. innumerabilis demonstretur. Quamvis aliud est assistere, aliud minislrare. Assistunt enim illæ procul dubio potestates, quae ad quædam hominibus nuntianda non exeunt. Minislranl vero hi qui ad explenda officia nunliorum veniunt, sed tamen ipsi quoqne contemplatione ab intimis non recedunt.

infinite.—In the knowledge of human reason there is no number for the supernal spirits, because it does not know how great is that host of the invisible army; of which it is said through Daniel: 'Thousands of thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times a hundred thousand stood before him' (Daniel VII, 10). The number of the citizens above is expressed as both infinite and defined, so that he who is numerable to God may be shown to be innumerable to men. Yet it is one thing to stand before, another to minister. For those powers stand before without doubt who do not go forth to announce certain things to men. But those minister who come to fulfil the offices of messengers, and yet even they do not withdraw from the innermost things in their contemplation.

Et quia plures sunt qui ministrant, quam hi qui principaliter assistunt, assistentium numerus quasi defininitus, h ministrantium vero indefinitus Ostenditur. Vet. VIII] 19. Dei milites cur dicantur. — Angelicos vero spiritus recte Dei milites dicimus,quia decertare eos contra potestates aereas non ignoramus. Quæ tamen certamina non labore, sed imperio peragunt, quia quidquid agendo contra immundos spiritus appetunt, ex adjutorio cuncta regentis possunt. De hac namque 543 militia, nascente rege nostro, scriptum est: Subito facta est cum angelo multitudo militiœ cœleslis (Luc., 13).

And because those who minister are more numerous than those who chiefly stand before, the number of those standing before is shown as it were defined, but of those ministering indefinite. Why the angelic spirits are called God's soldiers.—We rightly call the angelic spirits God's soldiers, because we are not ignorant that they wage war against the powers of the air. Yet these battles they accomplish not by toil but by command, because whatever they seek to do in acting against the unclean spirits, they can do all things by the aid of him who governs all. For concerning this warfare, at the birth of our King, it is written: 'Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host' (Luke II, 13).

Cui tamen militiae electorum quoque hominum numerus jungitur, qui per sublime mentis desiderium, a terrenae conversationis servitute liberantur. De quibus per Paulum dicitur: Nemo militans Deo implicat se negotiis sæcularibus (II Tim. II, 4). Qui licet nunc pauci appareant, in invisibili tamen patria innumerabiles regnant, quia etsiex comparatione pravorum pauci sunt, in congregationis suae Irequentia metiri nequaquam possunt. Quia vero eorumdem militum virtus non propriis viribus, sed supernae gratiæ infusione roboratur, recte subjungitur:

To this warfare is joined also the number of the elect among men, who through the sublime desire of the mind are freed from the servitude of an earthly manner of life. Of whom it is said through Paul: 'No one warring for God entangles himself in secular affairs' (2 Tim. II, 4). Though these now appear few, yet in the invisible fatherland they reign innumerable, because though by comparison with the wicked they are few, they can by no means be measured in the multitude of their own congregation. But because the virtue of these same soldiers is strengthened not by their own powers but by the infusion of supernal grace, it is rightly added:
