V ers. 10,11.— Nonne sicut lac mulsisti me, et sicut caseum me coagulasti? Pelle et carnibus vestisti me, ossibus et nervis compegisti me. 78. Hominis ortus descriptio.
Verses 10-11. — 'Hast Thou not milked me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, Thou hast knit me together with bones and sinews.' 78. A description of man's coming to be. — Man, being fashioned, was made as clay; but, being propagated, he is both milked out as milk from the seed, and curdled as cheese in the flesh. He is clothed with flesh and skin, he is made solid with bones and sinews. By the clay, therefore, the quality of the first creation is expressed; but by the milk the order of the ensuing conception, because he is led on by the increments of the curdling, so that little by little he is strengthened into bones. But narrow is the praise of God in the description of the body created, unless there be also afterward expressed the wondrous inbreathing of the quickening. Whence it is added:
