V ers. 17.— Ostendam tibi, audi me, quod vidi nar- rabo tibi. 40. Superbi quo altius per intelligentiam assurgunt, per elationem gravius cadunt. — Habent hoc omnes arrogantes proprium, ut cum rectum quid vel a par- vum senserint, in usum hoc elationis inflectant; atque unde per intellectum sibimetipsis altiores fiant, inde per tumorem in foveam elationis cadant, seque doctis doctiores existiment, reverentiam sibi a melioribus exigant, et docere sanctiores quasi ex auctoritate contendent. Unde nunc dicitur: Ostendam tibi, audi me. Et quia cum minore auctoritate docet is qui audita quam is qui ea quae viderit loquitur, ut for- tiorem sibimet auctoritatem Eliphaz b arroget, decit:
Verse 17: 'I will show you, hear me; what I have seen I will declare to you.' 40. The proud, the higher they rise by understanding, the more grievously they fall by exaltation. — All the arrogant have this as their own peculiarity: that when they have perceived anything right or even small, they bend it to the use of exaltation; and whence they might become loftier than themselves through understanding, thence they fall through swelling into the pit of exaltation, and they esteem themselves more learned than the learned, they demand reverence for themselves from their betters, and they contend to teach the holier as though from authority. Whence now it is said: 'I will show you, hear me.' And because he who speaks the things he has heard teaches with less authority than he who speaks the things he has seen, that Eliphaz may arrogate to himself a stronger authority, he says:
第十七節：「我要指示你，你聽我；我所看見的，我要向你陳明。」40. 驕傲的人藉悟性升得越高，藉自高跌得越重。——一切傲慢之人都有此特徵：當他們領悟到任何正確、甚或微小之事時，便將其扭曲為自高之用；他們本可藉悟性超越自己而升高，卻反因膨脹而跌入自高的坑中，並自以為比有學問者更有學問，向勝過他們的人索取尊敬，又彷彿憑權威爭著要教導比自己更聖潔的人。故現今說：「我要指示你，你聽我。」且因為那述說自己所聽見之事的人，比那述說自己所看見之事的人教導時權威較小，以利法為要給自己攬取更強的權威，便說：

Quod vidi narrabo tibi. Quia vero nonnunquam hae- retici de damnatis suis patribus confunduntur, hae- tamen eorum sententias quasi cum auctoritate ad medium proferunt, ex quorum stultitia jure reproban- tur, recte ipsa haereticorum audacia subinfertur, cum dicitur:
'What I have seen I will declare to you.' But because sometimes the heretics are confounded by their condemned fathers, yet nevertheless they bring forward their opinions as though with authority into the midst — those by whose folly they are justly reproved — rightly is the very audacity of the heretics subjoined, when it is said:
「我所看見的，我要向你陳明。」但因為異端有時被他們那些已受定罪的教父弄得狼狽，卻仍將這些人的意見彷彿帶著權威公然提出——他們正因這些人的愚妄而理當受責——所以異端的這種放肆被恰當地接著提出，就是當這話說：
