I bid. — Ac familia Multa nimis. 25. Stulti mundi prius vocati quam sapientes. — Quid est, quod prius animalium multitudo describi- tur, et familia in extremo memoratur: nisi quod ad cognitionem fidei prius stulta mundi collecta sunt, ut post ejus etiam astuta vocarentur, Paulo attes- tante, qui ait: Non multi sapientes secundum carnem, non multi potentes, non multi nobiles, sed quae stulta sunt mundi, elegit Deus, ut confundat sapientes [ I Cor. i, 27)? Ipsa namque sanctae Ecclesiae principia, litte- rarum perhibentur ignara, ut videlicet, cunctis in praedicatoribus suis Redemptor o tenderet quod ad vitam credentes populos non sermo, sed causa sua- deret. Sequitur:
The same. — 'And a very great household.' 25. The foolish of the world called before the wise. — What is it, that first the multitude of animals is described, and the household is mentioned last: save that unto the knowledge of the faith the foolish of the world were first gathered, that afterwards its shrewd ones too might be called, Paul attesting, who says: 'Not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that He may confound the wise' (1 Cor. i, 27)? For the very beginnings of the holy Church are recorded to be ignorant of letters, that clearly the Redeemer might show, in all His preachers, that not speech but His own cause persuaded the believing peoples unto life. There follows:
