V ers. 25. — Quia timor quem timebam evenit mihi, et quod verebar, accidit. 16. Judicia Dei quam me(??)uenda. — Justi igitur de- flent et pavent, et magnis se lamentis cruciant, quia deseri formidant; et quamvis de correptione sua gaudeant, eorum tamen trepidam mentem correp- tio ipsa perturbat; ne malum quod tolerant, non pia percussio disciplinae sit, sed animadversio justa vin- dictae. Quod bene Psalmista considerans ait: Quis novit potestatem irae tuae ( Psal. lxxxix, 11)? Potestas quippe divinae irae nostra non potest mente compre- hendi, quia ejus dispensatio obscuris super nos dis- positionibus, saepe unde aestimatur deserere, inde nos recipit;

Verse 25. — 'For the fear which I feared hath come upon me, and that which I dreaded hath befallen me.' 16. How greatly the judgments of God are to be feared. — The just therefore weep and are afraid, and torment themselves with great laments, because they dread to be forsaken; and although they rejoice in their correction, yet that very correction disturbs their trembling mind, lest the evil which they endure be not the pious stroke of discipline, but the just visitation of punishment. Which the Psalmist, considering well, says: 'Who knoweth the power of thy wrath?' (Ps. lxxxix, 11). For the power of the divine wrath cannot be comprehended by our mind, because its dispensation, by obscure dispositions over us, often takes us up from the very quarter whence it is thought to forsake us;

et unde nos recipere creditur, inde de- relinquit; ut plerumque hoc fiat gratia, quod ira dicitur, et hoc aliquando ira sit, quod gratia puta- tur. Nonnullos enim flagella corrigunt, nonnullos ad impatientiae vesaniam perducunt; et alios prospera quia demulcent, ab insania mitigant; alios quia ele- vant, funditus ab omni spe conversionis eradicant. Cunctos autem vitia ad ima pertrahunt: sed tamen quidam eo ab his facilius redeunt, quo se in eis cor- ruis e altius erubescunt. Et semper virtutes ad su- perna sublevant; sed nonnunquam quidam dum tu- morem de virtute concipiunt, per ipsum tramitem ascensio is cadunt.

and from the quarter whence He is believed to receive us, thence He forsakes; so that very often that becomes grace which is called wrath, and that is sometimes wrath which is supposed to be grace. For scourges correct some, but drive others to the madness of impatience; and prosperity, because it soothes some, calms them from frenzy; while others, because it exalts them, it utterly uproots from all hope of conversion. Vices, indeed, drag all men down to the depths: yet some the more easily return from them, the more deeply they blush at having fallen into them. And virtues always raise men up to things on high; yet sometimes some, while they conceive a swelling from virtue, fall by that very path of ascent.

Quia ergo potestas divinoe irae minime cognoscitur, in cunctis necesse est ut sine cessatione timeatur. Sequitur:

Because therefore the power of the divine wrath is by no means known, it is necessary that in all things it be feared without ceasing. There follows:
