314 55. Sancti ita incerti sunt ut confidant, ita con- fidunt ut non torpeant.—Si enim remota pietate discu- timur, opus nostrum poena dignum est, quod remu- nerari praemiis praestolamur. Vir igitur sanctus, sub occulta judicia trepidans, dicit: Si autem et sic tm- pius sum, quare frustra laboravi? d non quo hunc la- borasse poenitet, sed quo incertus esse de praemiis et inter labores dolet. Sciendum vero est quod viri sancti ita incerti sunt ut confidant, atque ita confidunt ut tamen ex securitate non torpeant.
55. The saints are so uncertain that yet they trust, and so trust that they do not grow slothful. — For if, mercy set aside, we are examined, our work is worthy of punishment which we look to have rewarded with prizes. The holy man therefore, trembling under the hidden judgments, says: But if I am wicked even so, why have I laboured in vain? — not that it repents him to have laboured, but that he grieves to be uncertain of the rewards and to be amid labours. But it must be known that holy men are so uncertain that yet they trust, and so trust that nevertheless they do not from security grow slothful.

Quia ergo plerum- que mens e et impen a rectis actibus trepidat, restat ut postquam bonum opus agitur lacrymae f depreca- tionis exquirantur, quatenus ad aeterna praemia me- ritum recti operis subvehat humilitas postulationis, [ Vet. XXVIII, Rec. XIX.] Sed tamen sci(??)ndum est quia mundos nos ad perfectum reddere, vel vita, vel lacrymae non valent quousque nos mortalitas nostrae corruptionis tenet. Unde et apte subjungitur:
Since therefore the mind for the most part trembles even at upright deeds, it remains that after a good work is done the tears of supplication be sought out, so that the humility of entreaty may bear up the merit of the upright work unto the eternal rewards. Whence also it is fittingly subjoined:
