168:1
Amici possunt vocari. Condi- cunt sibi haeretici, quando prava quaedam contra Ec- clesiam concorditer sentiunt; et in quibus a veritate discrepant, sibi in falsitale concordant.
In the same place. — For they had made an appointment together to come to visit him and to comfort him. Heretics agree together against the Church. They can be called friends. — The heretics make an appointment among themselves when they concordantly hold certain perverse things against the Church; and in the very matters in which they disagree from the truth, they agree with one another in falsehood. But all who instruct us concerning eternity, what else do they do but comfort us in the affliction of our pilgrimage? The heretics, however, because they desire to teach holy Church their own doctrines, draw near to her as though comforting her. Nor is it wonderful that those who express the likeness of adversaries are named friends, since even to the very betrayer it is said: Friend, wherefore art thou come? (Matt. xxvi, 50)
同處。——他們約定一同來探望他、安慰他。異端聯合起來敵擋教會。他們可被稱為朋友。——異端彼此約定,是當他們同心持守某些敵擋教會的乖僻之事時;他們在偏離真理的事上,卻在虛謊上彼此相合。但凡教導我們永恆之事的人,所做的豈不就是在我們客旅的患難中安慰我們麼?然而異端因渴望把自己的教義教導聖教會,就彷彿安慰她一般靠近她。那些表現出敵對者樣式的人被稱為朋友,並不足為奇,因為就連對那出賣者也說:朋友,你來要作的事,就作吧(馬太福音二十六章50節);
168:2
and the rich man, who is burned in the fire of hell, is called 'son' by Abraham (Luke xvi, 25); because, even though the wicked neglect to be corrected by us, it is nevertheless fitting that they be named friends by us, not out of their own wickedness, but out of our kindness.
