Moralia in Job 206

Same verse.— Let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months. 37. God is to be entreated that the evils we have done may not be objected to us in the judgment.— The year of our enlightenment is then completed when, at the appearing of the eternal judge, the life of holy Church's pilgrimage is fulfilled. Then it receives the reward of its labour, when, this time of warfare being ended, it returns to its homeland. Whence it is well said through the Prophet: 'You shall bless the crown of the year of Your goodness' (Psalm 64:12 [65:11]). For the crown of the year is, as it were, blessed when, the time of labour being finished, the reward of the virtues is conferred. But the days of this year are the several individual virtues; the months, moreover, the manifold deeds of the virtues.

But behold, when the mind is raised up through confidence, so as to hope that at the judge's coming it will be rewarded for its virtues, there also occur to its memory the evils which it has done; and it greatly dreads lest the strict judge, who comes to reward the virtues, examining also those things which were unlawfully done, should subtly weigh them; lest, when He completes the year, He should also number the night. Let it therefore say concerning this night: 'Let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months.' As if it entreated the strict judge, saying: When, the time of holy Church being completed, You manifest Yourself for the last examination, so reward the gifts which You have conferred, that You require not the evils which we have committed.

For if that night is counted in the days of the year, everything that we have done is confounded by the estimation of our depravity. And the days of the virtues shine no more, if, numbered up before Your sight, the dark confusion of our night obscures them. 38. Therefore let us leave nothing unpunished.— But if we are unwilling that inquiry concerning our night be raised then, we must greatly take care now that we be watchful in its examination; lest any fault whatever remain unpunished for us, lest the perverse mind dare to defend what it has done, and, by defending, add wickedness to wickedness.
