Moralia in Job 122

Ver. 20. Then Job arose and rent his garments. 55. Job, rising and rending his garment, prefigures Christ. — When the house had fallen and the sons were slain, Job arose; because, Judaea having been lost in unbelief and the preachers falling in the death of terror, the Redeemer of the human race raised Himself from the death of His own flesh: He showed with what judgment He forsook His persecutors. For to rise is His to show with what strictness He abandons sinners, just as to lie down is His to bear evils patiently. He rises, therefore, when He exercises the judgment of justice against the reprobate. Whence also He is rightly said to have rent His garments.

For what was the Lord's garment but the Synagogue, which, while the prophets preached, clung to the expectation of His incarnation? For just as He is now clothed with those by whom He is loved, as Paul testifies, saying: That He might present to Himself a glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle (Eph. 5:27). For that which is said to have no spot or wrinkle is surely shown to be a rational garment, both clean by action and stretched taut by hope. So, when Judaea believed that He was to be incarnate, by clinging to Him it was nonetheless His garment. 56. His garment, the Synagogue, was rent, some believing, others not believing. — But because the expected One came, and coming taught new things, and teaching wrought marvels, and working marvels endured evils;

He rent the garment which He had put on, when in Judaea He took some out of unbelief, and left others in unbelief. What then is the rent garment, but Judaea divided in contrary opinions? For if His garment had not been rent, the evangelist would not have said that, while the Lord preached, a dissension arose among the people, so that some said, He is good; but others, No, but He deceiveth the multitudes (John 7:12). His garment was as it were rent, which, being divided by opinions, lost the unity of concord. There follows:
