798:1
V ers. 8, 9. — Si ad Orientem iero, non apparet; si ad Occidentem, non intelligam eum; si ad sinistram, quid agam? non apprehendam eum; si me vertam ad dexteram, non videbo illum. 38. Deus invisibilis et incomprehensibilis, non in parte sed ubique quaerendus. — Creator quippe om- nium in parte non est, quia ubique est. Et tunc mi- nus invenitur, quando is qui totus ubique est in parte quaeritur. Incircumscriptus namque spiritus omnia intra semetipsum habet, quae tamen et im- plendo circumdat, et circumdando implet, et susti- nendo transcendit, et transcendendo sustinet. Bene autem postquam dictum est: Si ad Orientem iero, non apparet; si ad Occidentem, non intelligam eum;
Verses 8, 9. — If I go to the East, He appears not; if to the West, I shall not understand Him; if to the left, what shall I do? I shall not lay hold of Him; if I turn to the right, I shall not see Him. 38. God, invisible and incomprehensible, is to be sought not in one place but everywhere. — For the Creator of all is not in a part, because He is everywhere. And He is the less found when He, who is wholly everywhere, is sought in a part. For the uncircumscribed Spirit holds all things within Himself, which yet He both surrounds by filling and fills by surrounding, and transcends by sustaining and sustains by transcending. And well, after it was said: If I go to the East, He appears not; if to the West, I shall not understand Him;
if to the left, what shall I do? I shall not lay hold of Him; if I turn to the right, I shall not see Him — he straightway added: But He indeed knows my way. As if he openly said: I cannot see Him who sees me, and I cannot behold Him who beholds me subtly; so that plainly he may show that He is to be feared the more cautiously, the more He is not to be looked upon. For He who so regards us that He cannot be regarded by us, is the more to be feared, in that, seeing all things, He is Himself least seen. For when we believe that someone lies hidden in ambush against us, we fear him the more, the less we see him. And when we do not at all detect his snares where they are, we fear them even there where they are not.
[ Vet.
But our Creator, who is wholly everywhere, and beholding all things is not beheld, is so much the more to be feared, in that, remaining invisible, it is unknown when and what He decrees concerning our deeds. Yet these words can also be understood otherwise. For we go to the East when we lift up the mind in the consideration of His Majesty. But He appears not, because such as He is in His own nature He cannot prevail to be seen by mortal thought. If to the West, I shall not understand Him. [Old Reading,
798:4
XVI.] In dexte- ram procul dubio v(??)titur qui de virtutibus elevatur.
chapter 16.] We go to the West when we bring back to ourselves the eye of the heart that had been lifted up in God but was beaten back by the very immensity of the light; and wearied, we learn that what we were seeking is far above us; and considering our own mortality, we discover that we are as yet unworthy to be able to see the Immortal One. If to the left, what shall I do? I shall not lay hold of Him. To go to the left is to consent to the delights of sins. And assuredly it is manifest that he cannot lay hold of God who still lies on the left in the delight of sin. If I turn to the right, I shall not see Him. To the right, without doubt, he turns who is exalted by his virtues.
798:5
In quibus cunctis plerumque se anima discutit, (??)ec tamen plene deprehendere semetipsam valet. Unde hic apte subditur:
But he cannot see God who rejoices in a private gladness over his good deeds, because in him the swelling of self-exaltation presses down the eye of the heart. Whence it is well said elsewhere: Turn not aside to the right hand, nor to the left (Deut. 5:32). In all which things the soul very often examines itself, and yet cannot fully discern its own self. Whence here it is aptly subjoined:
