V ers. 13. — Ego ille quondam opulentus repente contritus sum. 17. — Firmis mentibus nulla adversa repente adve- niunt. — In eo quod se repente contritum asseruit infirmorum mentem improvidam designavit. Qui dum mala quae ventura sunt praevidere nesciunt, tanto eis graviora fiunt quanto et ab eis inopi- nata tolerantur. Firmis autem mentibus repente ad- versa non uniunt, quia priusquam veniant praevi- dentur. Quod tamen nunc quoque sancta Ecclesia in quibusdam retro labentibus patitur, qui post do- ctrinae opulentiam subitis aliquando vitiis conteruntur, ut sic in quibus lam malis corruant, ac si verbi pa- bulum nunquam habuissent. Sequitur:
Verse 13. — I, who once was opulent, have suddenly been crushed. 17. — To firm minds no adversities come suddenly. — In that he asserted that he was suddenly crushed, he designated the improvident mind of the weak. Who, while they know not how to foresee the evils that are to come, these become the more grievous to them the more they are borne as unexpected by them. But to firm minds adversities do not come suddenly, because before they come they are foreseen. Yet this too holy Church now suffers in certain who slip backward, who, after the opulence of doctrine, are sometimes crushed by sudden vices, so that they fall into certain evils as if they had never had the nourishment of the word. There follows:
第十三節。——我這從前富足的，忽然被壓碎。十七、——對堅定的心靈，逆境絕不忽然臨到。——他既宣稱自己忽然被壓碎，便指出軟弱者那不加防備的心思。這些人既不懂預見將來的惡，這些惡就越發加重於他們，因為他們把它們當作意料之外來承受。但對堅定的心靈，逆境並非忽然臨到，因為在它們來到之前便已預見。然而這事聖教會如今也在某些倒退之人身上遭遇，他們在教義的豐盛之後，有時被突來的惡習壓碎，以致陷入某些惡中，彷彿從未得過道的餵養。接著說：
