737:1

Hoec est pars hominis impii a Deo, et hoereditas verborum ejus a Domino. 39 In judicio vel minima mala punientur. - Si enim bene agere in hac positus vita voluisset, partem apud Dominum coelestis regni consortium haberet. Sed quia pravis subdi desideriis elegit, partem suam a Domino in tormentis invenit, quia ejusdem Domini participare gratiam non quaesivit. B(??)ne autem dici- tur: Et hoereditas verborum ejus a Domino. Qui enim pro magnis malis in supplicium mergitur, fortasse credebatur quod pro verbis quae male dixerat minime judicaretur.

This is the portion of the impious man from God, and the inheritance of his words from the Lord. 39. In the judgment even the least evils shall be punished.—For if he had willed to act well while placed in this life, he would have his portion with the Lord in the fellowship of the heavenly kingdom. But because he chose to be subject to perverse desires, he finds his portion from the Lord in torments, because he did not seek to share the grace of the same Lord. But it is well said: And the inheritance of his words from the Lord. For he who is plunged into punishment for great evils might perhaps be believed to be by no means judged for the words that he had wickedly spoken.

Sed cum districta Dei omnipotentis jus- titia supplicium a reprobis pro perversis actibus exi- git eis mala usque ad verborum retributionem reddit, ut qui de magnis malis debitores sunt, suppliciis tra- diti, etiam novissimum quadrantem solvant. Illis enim minima parcuntur qui majora in se districte male defleverunt. But when the rigorous justice of Almighty God exacts punishment from the reprobate for perverse deeds, it renders evils to them even to the retribution of words, so that those who are debtors for great evils, delivered over to torments, may pay even the last farthing. For to those the least things are spared who have rigorously bewailed in themselves the greater. For those whom great evils press, even the least evils likewise afflict in hell. But holy men desire not to receive a portion from the Lord, but to have the Lord Himself as their portion. Whence the Prophet prays, saying: «The Lord is my portion» (Ps. 118 [119]:57).

Haec Sophar ita intulit, ut per ea quae con- tra hypocritam dixerat beati Job vitam feriret, exis- timans quod is qui a Domino percussus esset cuncta bona quae egerat mente simplici non egisset. Quem enim percussum vidit, Deo displicuisse credidit.

But the wicked man, because he did not seek to have the Lord Himself as his portion, finds his portion outside the Lord to be fire, so that, shut out from His face, because he did not long to rejoice in Him, he may be tortured beneath Him. These things Zophar so brought forward, that by the things he had said against the hypocrite he might smite the life of blessed Job, supposing that he who had been smitten by the Lord had not done with a simple mind all the good things he had done. For whom he saw smitten, he believed to have displeased God.

Sed beatus Job more sanctae et universalis Ecclesiae, quae a perversis ver- borum jacula aequanimiter tolerat, et cu(??)n superbo- rum dicta audit, humilitatis suae tramitem non relin- quit, cum magna cordis humilitate subjunxit, dice(??)s:

But the friends of blessed Job in this matter too hold the likeness of heretics, who in holy Church, while they behold certain well-doers groaning under scourges, suppose that these have no good merits in their good deeds, and believe those to be evil whom they see afflicted by the divine lash—not knowing indeed that «many are the tribulations of the just» (Ps. 33:20), and that «He scourgeth every son whom He receiveth» (Heb. 12:6). But blessed Job, after the manner of the holy and universal Church, which patiently endures the darts of words from the perverse, and when it hears the sayings of the proud, does not forsake the path of its humility, with great humility of heart subjoined, saying:
